Mission Beach is a beautiful seaside town located on 14 kilometers of sandy beaches and backed by lush mountainous rainforests. Similar to Palm Cove's seaside village feel, Mission Beach has retained its laid back charm while growing under a tourism surge. Mission Beach is long and spread out, which allows tourists plenty of opporunity to find a quiet hotel somewhere along the beach.
Located 2 hours south of Cairns and 3 hours north of Townsville, Mission Beach is not only a holiday destination in its own right but is the gateway to some of North Queensland's best island resorts like Dunk Island and Bedarra Island. Dunk Island is a favorite family island holiday destination and is also popular for day trippers leaving from Mission Beach. Bedarra Island is one of the most exclusive islands in Australia and holidays to Bedarra Island are filled with luxury, sophistication and tranquility.
The standout Mission Beach accommodation property, Castaways Resort & Spa. Castaways is the only property right on the beach and offers a full resort experience. Then just off the mainland lies family friendly Dunk Island and the luxurious Bedarra Island to suit every accommodation need.
There are a couple of tours that run right out of Mission Beach. Full day Tully River white water rafting is one option with over 45 rapids to travel. Daytrips to tropical islands is also common. Further up the coast to Cairns and Port Douglas, activities such as Great Barrier Reef day trips and diving tours, reef cruises, rainforest tours, hot air balloons, scenic flights and the famous Skyrail can be found.
Mission Beach is located in a tropical climate surround by rainforests and lush farming areas. The weather involves a wet season over the summer months from December to February and is quite hot and humid. Spring and autumn are the best time to visit as the weather is warm and comfortable - perfect for swimming and sun baking. The winter months are cool but only a light jumper is required at night time.
Mission beach is made up of 4 villages that used to be separated. Going south there are the villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach. Development has also started on 2 beaches just north of Mission Beach - Brooks Beach and Garners Beach. The last population count had the area under at under 1000 residents. Mission Beach is known for being home to the Southern Cassowary and a 5 meter statue of the Cassowary is found at Wongaling Beach and sightings of the rare bird are common in spring when they breed.
